This is what the kitchen looked like when we were first invited into our clients home...

We will let the "after" pictures speak for themselves...

The wife particularly loved the expansive custom cutlery insert we created for her using chrome accents.

We will highlight the husbands favourite part of this kitchen! His beer glass cabinet!

This is where he chose to showcase our "Couture Label" for all to see when he entertains!

Earn 3 LEED points when you use our cabinetry!

EXCITING GREEN NEWS:

Builders can earn 3 LEED pts. toward their
certification when they use OUR cabinetry!!!

Last week we met with our rep from Cambria and they told us that projects could achieve 1pt if their countertops were used. They said this was very important to a lot of "green" builders.

So, we decided to look into how many points can be earned by using our green Clean Air cabinets.

We found out this week that builders can earn 3 LEED pts toward their certification using OUR Cabinetry.

This is really significant because just by choosing to use Cambria and OUR Cabinetry gets them 10% of their needed points toward basic certification!

This must make our clients feel fantastic that they are doing their part in making our world a cleaner place to live!

Note: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a third-party certification program and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. As an internationally recognized mark of excellence, LEED provides building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance.

Every little bit helps make our homes cleaner and our world greener!

Just Announced: 2 New Cambria Colours!!!

JUST ANNOUNCED:
The newest designs from Cambria Quartz!
If you have talked to us about your countertop choices you have most likely heard us discuss with you the magnificence of the Cambria product!

This countertop is maintenance and worry free! It compliments our Clean-Air cabinets as this product does not emit any harmful gasses, it is nonprous and nonabsorbant, giving you a truly healthy kitchen.

Cambria is not only the logical choice when it comes to health of your home and the ease of maintance and worry, it is also a beautiful designer product that is always reinventing themselves with new designs and colours.

The two latest designs were just introduced
and we have them here for you:

Berkeley: The newest addition to the Waterstone Collection
The inspiration behind this design was a little ancient town called Berkely, that acted as a gathering spot for neighbouring areas of the region. For more about Berkely, both the town and the design, visit here.

Rosslyn: The latest addition to the Jewel Collection
This Rosslyn design mirrors an ornate medieval church in Scotland named Rosslyn Chapel.
Explore the story behind the Rosslyn design here.

We are back from KBIS 2012 in Chicago!!! What a great time! Our favourite area in the entire show was the Shipping Container area called UNcontained!!! The UNcontained exhibit, was a really cool concept in which each designer had to design a shipping container to creatively reflect their perspective of a particular generation. Each designer was given "design implications" they had to take into consideration. They also had an actual "client" to design for. Below I will show you the implications for each design project/generation, along with a link to a little story about the container and the client for you to read more if you want, and then finally the solution the designer came up with and displayed at the show! We really hope you enjoy this exhibit as much as we did! We would LOVE to hear what your favourite container is!

Hip Home

http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/nielsen/kbis_uncontained_hiphome/#/2
the container… The New Hip Home space fits neatly into any loft, studio or home and is an uncontained look at how transitional living can be created with style and creativity. Mason’s lifestyle and spaces are going to be fluid and ever-changing during his young adulthood, which means he’s collecting pieces that reflect his personality and yet organize his new space into a functional home. Understanding that he has a keen eye for design, a willingness to try new things and a little help from Mom and Dad - is key to learning how to design solutions that “contain” his adventurous lifestyle. Mason invites you to visit Uncontained for a behind-the-scenes tour – and impromptu jam session - in his space. Come see how he is truly living the dream in a his new Hip Home!

CULINARY CURATORS

the container... Take an uncontained journey with these culinary curators as they reimagine a 1920’s home into an expression of their passions and interests. Tala and Daniel’s home is their dream and it shows in the meticulous care and research they put into every decision as they remodel and renovate. Showcasing their personal stories is key, and for this couple it’s all about foodie adventures. Throw the traditional approach to design out the window as you tour this space and live it up a little in Tala and Daniel’s world where storing (and showing off!) creative ingredients and spices is fun, entertaining and dining are an event and a wine collection becomes art! Taking an uncontained approach to design for Gen Now has never been more fun…

FAMILY MIXOLOGIST

http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/nielsen/kbis_uncontained_familymixologist/#/2
the container… The mixologist space is not the just the basement in Gen Xers Carlos and Elana’s home, rather it’s an uncontained look at how their lifestyle, focus on their blended family and commitment to community have changed their priorities when it comes to their home and design. Learning to live with – and love – what you have and learning to understand the small changes you can make to your space can make all the difference for the Gen Xer family. Take an “uncontained” look at how Carlos and Elana enjoy living local, rocking out and hanging out in this creative look at basement spaces!

FOREVER FIT

http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/nielsen/kbis_uncontained_foreverfit/#/2
the container… The forever fit space is not a room in active Zooomers, Roger and Nancy’s home, rather it’s an uncontained look at how their lifestyle and “second middle age” has affected their desire for design, products and solutions to fit their modern needs. Whether it’s a cool shower (for indoors or out!) with a “seat” when you need it, a work station hiding a pedi-bath or creative ways they can store treasures for their new puppy or the grandkids, the forever fit space should inspire you to take an “uncontained” look at a creative perspective on design for the forever young Zoomer generation!

The Care Giver

http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/nielsen/kbis_uncontained_caregiver/#/2
the container... The caregiver space is not a room or an in-law quarters in retired Prime Timer Gloria’s son’s home, rather it’s an uncontained look at how Gloria’s change in lifestyle has created new design needs for her and her extended family. This container showcases all of the “little touches” Gloria’s arrival has made on an existing family home. Whether it’s a redefined outdoor space, a creative improvement Marcus made to make the home accessible for her or even an interesting way to turn a simple bedroom into her own private space - living in a multi-generational home is the way of the future. Take an uncontained look at Gloria’s new home, her passions and her values while she is in the Prime Time of her life!

This was my favourite container in the exhibit. Here is a picture of the "desk" area at the left of the bed. What a great way to re-purpose old appliances!!! LOVE IT!

THERE'S A BRIGHT IDEA!!
(Green Tip)

Switching over to LED lighting in your home will not only save you money and energy it will save you time by not having to go to the store and replacing your bulbs as often!

Here are some of the wonderful advantages to using LED:

- LED's have a 50,000 + hour life span.  That means if you were to keep them on for 12 hours a day they would last more than 12 years.

- LED replacement bulbs contain high power LED chips that operate at 120V AC and are a direct replacement for the incandescent and halogen bulbs you are currently using.

- LEDs produce a minimal amount of heat and the bulbs remain cool to the touch.

- LEDs will reduce your energy costs by up to 90 percent.

- LEDs are made from non toxic-materials and contain no mercury.

- LEDs are solid state with no filaments and are virtually unbreakable.

- LEDs are the most environmentally friendly lighting product available today.

Another exciting new product in the market is the first bulb shown in the picture above that has a satin glass lightbulb which matches the ambiance of incandescent lighting, with warm light diffused at a very wide angle but with an energy savings of 85%.

Reveals Top Kitchen & Bath Trends for 2012

Surveying more than 350 National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) member designers, the 2012 NKBA DesignTrends Survey cites the materials, product types and styles that have been incorporated into kitchen and bath designs in the final three months of 2011.

1. Decline in Cherry Wood - Rise in Lesser-Used Woods

Walnut Door
In kitchens, cherry wood is in decline. Cherry has consistently been the first or second most popular type of wood for cabinetry, along with maple, each year. However, designers are slowly shifting away from it. While 80 percent of NKBA member kitchen designers had recently specified cherry cabinetry as 2010 approached, that figure fell to 69 percent heading into 2012.

A number of lesser-used woods are being specified more often, including oak, which is specified by twice as many designers now (22 percent) versus two years ago. Walnut has increased from 3 percent in 2010 to 13 percent today, while birch is now specified by three times as many kitchen designers as it was a year ago (15 percent vs. 5 percent). Another popular choice is bamboo, which has doubled to 10 percent now.

2. Finishes - The darker the better in stains and even the whites will be distressed
Natural kitchen cabinetry continues a steady move toward darker finishes. While light natural finishes have been recently specified by 30 percent of kitchen designers, medium natural finishes stand at 55 percent, with dark natural finishes at 58 percent. Among painted cabinetry, white continues to be the most popular option. Another trend to note is that distressed finishes are making a comeback. After being specified by just 5 percent of designers last year, that figure has now risen to 22 percent.

Glass Backsplash
3. Glass backsplash gives natural stone and ceramic tile a run for its money
Although glass remains a niche material for kitchen countertops, it’s been recently used by more than half of kitchen designers as a backsplash material, rising from 41 percent a year ago to 52 percent now. This trails only natural stone tile at 60 percent and ceramic tile (including porcelain), which has been specified of late by some 74 percent of designers

4. LED lighting on the rise (stay tuned to our Green Tips, we'll show some cool LED bulbs available)
Energy efficiency is a real trend that can be seen taking hold in homes across the United States and Canada. Despite the higher initial cost, LED lighting illustrates this trend. Specified by 50 percent of NKBA member kitchen designers entering 2010, that rate has jumped in the past year to 70 percent.

Kohler’s Elate pullout faucet
5. Pullout kitchen faucets (2-in-1)
Pullout kitchen faucets have been established as the dominant type of kitchen faucet. Designers are increasingly eschewing the standard faucet with a detached side spray in favor of pullout models that integrate the two functions into a single unit. Fourteen of out every 15 designers who designed a kitchen over the final three months of 2011 incorporated a pullout faucet. These versatile models might also be mitigating the need for pot-filler faucets, which have been recently specified by just 28 percent of designers, down from 41 percent two years ago.

6. Medicine Cabinets are back, did they ever really leave?
The medicine cabinet had been swept aside in bath remodels over the past few years, replaced by decorative wall mirrors. However, as homeowners look for more efficient use of space, most designers are now turning toward medicine cabinets as an effective way to gain additional storage without having to increase the footprint of a room. Last year medicine cabinets were specified by 36 percent of designers, however, entering 2012, some 66 percent have recently incorporated a medicine cabinet into a bath remodel.

7. Transitional design has finally pushed traditional looks out of the #1 seat

Transitional Couture Kitchen
For the first time since the NKBA began tracking annual design trends, traditional is no longer the most popular type of design. In both the kitchen and the bath, transitional is now the most common style. The transitional style is identified as a blend of traditional and contemporary, typified by lines that are simpler than traditional, but a bit more elaborate than contemporary.

8. Increased design with solid surfaces
In the NKBA’s 2011 Design Trends Survey, the use of solid surfaces in the kitchen jumped from 11 to 26 percent from the year earlier. This year, that number has increased again, as solid surfaces have been specified by 30 percent of designers for use in kitchens. The same pattern holds true in newly remodeled baths. Quartz’s popularity has dipped and marble is currently the third most popular vanity top material.
9. Neutral paints are still the safer and most popular choice
In kitchens, gray was used as the overall color scheme by only 9 percent of designers as we moved into 2010, but that figure has risen to 33 percent this year. The use of gray color schemes has risen just as dramatically in bath remodels.

Whites and off-whites continue to be the most popular color schemes in the kitchen and bath, followed by beiges and bones. Brown is the third most popular color in kitchens and the fourth most popular in bathrooms. In the kitchen, bronzes/terracottas have risen over the past two years, and greens have increased as well.

Bronze Hardware
10. Polished finishes increase while we also see a gain in bronzePolished chrome is staging a comeback in both the kitchen and bath.  Polished nickel is also up to 25 percent in kitchens and 32 percent in baths. The increased use of polished finishes is coming at the expense of brushed finishes. Only stainless steel has managed to buck the trend away from brushed finishes, as it rose slightly in the kitchen and increased significantly in the bath. Bronze finishes also continue to be popular.

Daylight Savings

Although good old Ben Franklin is credited with the idea of daylight savings time, it was first implemented during WW1, as one of the original attempts at conserving energy.

Today, the theory is both praised and criticized. However, if we make a conscious effort to use our natural sunlight when possible rather than artificial lighting inside the house, than we are doing our part to help the DST work in our favour for a greener future.

Choose Sturdy Utensils - Green Tip

Our "disposable" society is one of our biggest culprits in hurting the environment. When it comes time to purchase your kitchen utensils, choose sturdy utensils that will stand the test of time. Low-quality wooden spoons, for example, can rot, and plastic will melt. Also, buy high-quality knives that you can sharpen by hand and stainless cutlery that won't have to be replaced after a couple years. Not only do we design your kitchen, call us and we can help organize both your cutlery and cooking utencils to help make your cooking experience an enjoyable one!

CLEAN drain CLEANER! - Green Tip

Put away the harsh chemicals:

Unclog your drain with Baking Soda and Vinegar

  1. Pour 3/4-1 cup of baking soda in the drain.
  2. Pour 1/2 cup vinegar in the drain and immediately cover the drain (with plug or set a plate over it – you want to keep everything inside the drain)
  3. Leave everything to sit and work for about 30 mins (don’t use the sink during this time)
  4. After 30 mins, remove the cover and let hot water run thru the pipes for about 2-3 mins.
  5. For really tough clogs you may need to repeat – but if you do this on a regular basis (about once a month) it keeps your drains clear and fresh with out any problems.
Happy Valentine's Week - Green Tip

Green is the new red this Valentine's Day!

Before you run to the store to buy a Hallmark card, a dozen red 'toxic' roses and a box of Godiva, think about some greener ideas:

E-cards: Hallmark even offers this option. So you can send the gold standard of greeting cards without the guilt of killing a tree.

Living Plants: Think about buying a local grown potted flower this year instead. They provide the oxygen we breathe and they will last longer too!

Fair Trade Chocolates: Most grocery stores sell fair trade and organic chocolates. This is a better choice than the commercial brands that don't worry about the Earth or their workers.

We wish you all a very happy and healthy
Valentine's Day!

The Morning Brew... (Green Tip)

Brew "certified" coffee. Check the label. If it says it is USDA Certified Organic that means it was grown using sustainable standards.

Green on the Go! Not brewing at home? Take a travel mug to your favorite java joint to reduce wasteful cups. They may even fill it at a discount.

RECYCLE & Save Energy! (Green Tip)

Remember this while you are enjoying your Superbowl party when someone says "It doesn't matter if I throw out this ONE can."
YES, IT DOES!!

By recycling just one aluminum beverage can you can save enough electricity to power a:
TV for 3hours
or
100-watt light bulb for 4hours

Better yet, recycling 40 aluminum beverage cans has the energy-saving equivalent of one gallon of gasoline.

From Skyy Vodka to a Stunning Countertop...

Here is something to think about the next time you have to get rid of your glass:

100% of glass CAN be recycled
but...
100% of the glass dumped in our landfills will
NEVER decompose!

Vetrazzo knows this and takes great pride in manufacturing countertops using recycled glass that produce no off-gassing or VOCs!

Green Tip...

Experts estimate that by not eating a pound of beef, we save more water than by not showering for one year.

Wishing you and yours a very green 2012!
As most of you know we are very proud to offer one of the greenest cabinet lines in North America. In keeping with our initiatives, each week we will share with you a little tip about how you can do your part to make this world a better place.

To start off the year on the right foot we suggest brightening up your living spaces by adding indoor houseplants which will also improve your air quality! Happy New Year!
Happy "Green" Thanksgivng!
Many people are trading their celebrations of excess for a greener holiday party this Thanksgiving. From buying organic and shopping locally to earth conscious decorations and recycled dinnerware, there are several things you can do to reduce, reuse, and recycle during the holidays.
From our family to yours, we wish you a very Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving Holiday!

As they say, "We’ve got one planet and no do-overs. Together we’re making it sustainable."
The Art of Quartz
We have said before how much we love Cambria countertops because of how green, durable and food-safe the material is. Well, they have introduced their brand new line and now we are completely smitten with them. They are like pieces of art. How unique would it be to use the below design as an alternative to purchasing a beautiful Group of Seven print.
